Warning: Major spoilers ahead! The Mindy Project did what it does best with its fourth season finale, leaving viewers clamoring for more, and dying to know what happens next. Mindy and Danny got caught in an elevator, made out to some sexy music, and then made passionate love on the elevator floor. Meanwhile, Jody-feeling bad for lying to Mindy about his chlamydia-was closing a deal to purchase the upstairs condo in Mindy’s building so little Leo wouldn’t have to reside in a closet anymore. The next morning, after Danny and Mindy were released form the confines of their makeshift bedroom, Danny walked Mindy home, where they both said “I love you.” OK, so far so good, except, for the small fact that Danny’s engaged to someone else and Mindy doesn’t know about it yet. Fast-forward a few minutes later, and there’s Jody, standing in Mindy’s condo, telling her that he’s bought prime New York City property for her and Leo. Oh, and that he’s also in love with her. Got that? But that’s not all. To complicate things even more, Danny and Sarah’s wedding invitation was seen sitting unopened on Mindy’s kitchen counter. So, yes, you could say we’re in a bit of a pickle here.
“Mindy is going to have a huge reaction to [Danny’s engagement to Sarah],” previews executive producer, Matt Warburton, about what’s to come in season five. “This is hitting her where it hurts.” It’s also hitting the audience where it hurts. After years of Mindy’s dating trials and tribulations, you’d be hard pressed to find a more passionate fan base than the one rooting for Mindy and Danny. So, when Danny turned into the worst version of himself and the two split, audiences felt the brunt of it. If anything, they took it harder than Dr. Lahiri herself, who seemed to move on rather effortlessly. That was, until the elevator scene, when viewers got to see just how hard the last few months have been on Mindy. She purposely kept her distance from Danny in an effort to protect herself. Danny, unable to deal with the error of his ways, immediately jumped back into the dating scene looking for any Band-Aid to cover things up. And now? Well, now, we’re at a real conundrum, because both men fighting for Mindy’s heart have been dishonest over some pretty big things.
“Obviously Mindy has a really big decision to make,” says Warburton. “I think people will be surprised and very intrigued by what that decision actually is. We put her in a real corner, and next season, I think we’ve found a really interesting way to get her out of it that leads to a bunch of stuff. Danny has-one way or the other, no matter what happens-a new person in his life, who is a real threat to you know, status quo. There’s no way for Mindy to get out of the corner we painted her into without having to deal with it. I think a lot of next season will be explaining the fallout of what happens in these episodes.”
Until season five premieres (October 4, FYI), Warburton gave us a bit more insight into what it was like filming the finale, who might be the last man standing, and where the series might end.
